For decades, you, me and every other consumer were taught to believe that the more you spend on sunglasses, the better the quality will be. Well, sadly that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
The fact is that one company runs about 80% of the sunglasses industry and that one company controls all the pricing. How exactly? Well, they have
How exactly? Well, over the past couple of decades they have created manufacturing contracts with most if not all the high-end brands.
Brands like Chanel, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Miu Miu, Donna Karan, Stella McCartney, Tory Burch, just to name a few.
This single company also owns LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Apex by Sunglasses Hut, Pearle Vision, Sears Optical, Target Optical, Glasses.com and Eyemed, which is the second largest vision insurance company in the world. They also have manufacturing plants all over the globe, mostly in Italy and China.
So, that $150+ pair of sunglasses you just bought that has Prada on the side of them, was probably made in China or Italy. While it may say “Made in Italy”, most likely it was made in China where labor costs are cheaper, and then put together in Italy. So, what does this all mean exactly? It means that this one company controls all the pricing for the consumer, as they typically charge 10 sometimes even 20 times what it costs to make the sunglasses.
A couple of enterprises have even tried to boycott them. Ever hear of Oakley and Ray-ban? Yup, they tried to fight them in the pricing wars. Unfortunately, this one company decided to fight back by taking Oakley and Ray-ban out of their stores and these companies nearly went bankrupt.
So, what happened? Oakley and Ray-ban were bought out by the same company. Now their pricing is through the roof when they used to be competitively priced.
And that one company is none other than Luxottica designs.
